Aethecerus Wesmael, 1845

Aethecerus is a small genus with only two described species in North America. However, the Nearctic species lack the large excavated area posterior to the mandibles which in part characterizes the genus.

As the choropleth below shows, our knowledge of the diversity and distribution of the North American species placed in Aethecerus is extremely fragmentary.

Diagnosis

  • hypostomal and genal carina joining behind mandible large, forming a large excavated area (except in several Nearctic species)
  • scutellum flat
  • gastrocoelus and thyridium wide (wider than interthyridial width )
  • hind coxa of female without coxal tooth
  • female metasomal apex oxypygous
